True Luxury was conceived by New York artist Toland Grinnell, whose obsessively elaborate sculptures confront the nature of desire and the power of excess. His signature luxury trunks, in the spirit of Louis Vuitton, fold out into intricate adult furniture fantasies, all hand-crafted by the artist himself using the finest materials exotic woods, 18-karat gold, British tanned leather, even the occasional vintage bottle of wine and rare, bound edition of Giacomo Casanovas Memories. The centerpiece of the show is Pied--Terre, an installation of more than 30 matching trunks, each of which performs an essential household role. With a silken tent (complete with mink comforter), fully operational pneumatic shower, wood-burning fireplace, and dog spa, Grinnell has created a theoretically mobile apartment for two a camping set fit for the multi-millionaire who has no desire to ever sleep outdoors. The show also includes his-and-hers equestrian-themed trunks, Euro Prince and Double Red Huntress, equipped with retracting midget English riding saddles in matching leather. Inside these grown-up play sets, silver and gold-plated toy ponies can frolic in a fur-lined cave, dive into a pit made of genuine Swaroski crystal, or bathe in miniature wading pools filled with single-malt scotch whiskey or vintage blush champagne. For the gallery walls, Grinnell has fashioned a related line of sculptures, including Fidelio, a leather-clad glass vitrine with platinum blonde and jet-black adjustable wigs, accompanied by a collection of candles and gold-plated personal massage units. There is also a collection of spectacular, and possibly kinky, ostrich-feather Dusters. Sumptuous, sophisticated, and fun, this exhibition marks the European solo debut of this young American artist and luxury craftsman.
